Thresholds (Introduction)
We often hear the term anaerobic
threshold.
Occasionally we also hear the terms
lactate threshold, ventilation breaking point, ventilation threshold, heart
rate breaking point, heart rate deflection point, and heart rate threshold.
These terms are commonly misused, causing
confusion.
Critical power is a relatively-new
threshold term that has become popular with the more common use of on-the-bike
power monitors.
I also introduce other threshold terms,
somewhat tongue-in-cheek: Suffering threshold, fear threshold, and clunking
threshold.
By understanding thresholds, you will be
able to understand more clearly training theory and methods.
